Petrotrin probes crude discrepancies

PORT OF SPAIN, September 12, 2017 – Trinidad and Tobago’s state-owned Petrotrin confirmed Monday that investigations are in progress into discrepancies over crude volumes received at the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery.
The announcement follows allegations made by opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar Sunday during the United National Congress’ National Congress in Couva. Persad-Bissessar cited an internal document from Petrotrin detailing the inconsistencies between volumes received and the figures being recorded at storage tanks after being pumped by E&P operators.
While the document detailed discrepancies in volumes for July 2017, Persad-Bissessar claimed overpayment has been ongoing since July 2016, saying estimates for H1 2017 suggest Petrotrin overpaid the operator of a certain field by around USD 11.5 million.
Meanwhile, others continue to voice concerns over Selwyn Lashley’s role on Petrotrin’s new board of directors. Former Energy Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan called for Lashley’s removal citing conflicts of interest. Lashley currently operates as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Energy.
