Reliance commissions paraxylene facility

JAMNAGAR , December 29, 2016 – The first phase of Reliance Industry’s (RIL) paraxylene plant in Jamnagar has been commissioned, the private oil and gas major announced on Thursday.

The completion of the phase puts the plant’s yearly capacity at 2.2 million tonnes. The move almost doubles RIL’s production of paraxylene, from 2 million tonnes per year to 4.2 million tonnes per year, making the company the second-largest producer of the product in the world, accounting for 9% of worldwide capacity and 11% of global production. Paraxylene is the main ingredient for the manufacturing of polyester.

The plant’s new crystallisation technology, which is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than previous models, was bought from long-time partner BP.
