RWE to supply green hydrogen for TotalEnergies refinery in Germany

PARIS AND ESSEN, March 14, 2025 – TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with German energy company RWE under which RWE will supply 30,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen to TotalEnergies’ Leuna refinery in Germany, the companies announced on Wednesday.
The green hydrogen will be produced by a 300-MW electrolyser being built by RWE in Lingen, Germany, and scheduled for commercial launch in 2027. It will be delivered through a 600-kilometre pipeline starting in 2030.
Refineries use large quantities of hydrogen to remove sulphur from crude oil and typically produce it on-site in a process that uses natural gas as feedstock and generates carbon dioxide emissions. RWE and TotalEnergies estimate that substituting conventional hydrogen with green hydrogen in Leuna’s operations will prevent the emission of around 300,000 tpy of carbon dioxide.
“This long-term contract for green hydrogen marks an important milestone in reducing carbon dioxide emissions at our Leuna refinery. It will be made possible thanks to the completion of the hydrogen backbone by German authorities and their efficient support to green hydrogen customers,” said Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
The supply deal will last until 2044 and, as RWE’s first long-term offtake agreement of this size for green hydrogen, is an important anchor contract for RWE’s Lingen facility.
