Saudi Arabia celebrates massive increase in renewables

RIYADH, December 4, 2023 – Saudi Arabia has seen a 300% increase in installed renewables capacity since it launched its Saudi Green initiative in 2021, the government announced on Monday.

Since 2022, the country has installed 2.1 GW of renewable energy capacity, bringing total installed capacity to 2.8 GW.

By the end of 2023, more than 8 GW of renewable production capacity will be under construction, with additional projects totaling 13 GW in various stages of development.

 

By 2030, the country aims to meet 50% of its energy demand through renewable energy sources.

The country has invested more than USD 188 billion through more than 80 public and private initiatives to cut down on emissions and foster growth of renewable energy.

Additionally, the country is relying on moving away from reliance on oil towards gas, with four installed high-efficiency gas-fired power plants generating around 5.6 GW.

Since the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative, the nation has also planted 43.9 billion trees and shrubs on 940 square kilometres of land, with the target to plant 10 billion trees by 2030.

Saudi Arabia intends to reduce carbon emissions by 279 million tonnes per year by 2030, with the final goal of having net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.
