Trinidad moves towards hydrogen production

PORT OF SPAIN, December 4, 2023 – Trinidadian conglomerate ANSA McAL has signed an MoU with local renewables company Kenesjay Green (KGL) to develop green energy projects in the Caribbean region, the companies announced at COP28 in Dubai, UAE, on Saturday.

The deal was signed between Anthony N. Sabga, group CEO of ANSA McAL, and Philip Julian, founder, chairman and CEO of KGL.

KGL is currently working on building the USD 350-million Point Lisas NewGen green hydrogen project that involves cutting down the carbon footprint of Trinidad Nitrogen Company’s ammonia complex and supplying hydrogen to the Pointe Lisas estate.

The project involves sourcing 130 MW of electricity.

Around 30 MW coming from Lightsource bp’s Brechin Castle solar farm project that is currently under construction and expected to be commissioned in Q2 2025. The rest of the required capacity will come from PowerGen Point Lisas.

KGL is also working on hydrogen geothermal developments in Dominica.

“I am proud of this first step taken today to partner with KGL to explore projects to harness the Caribbean’s natural resources to provide more sustainable solutions that impact the lives of the people of our region,” said Anthony N. Sabga, group CEO of ANSA McAL.

COP28 runs from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
