Sempra signs MoU for Mexican gas development

Sempra Infrastructure has signed a non-binding MoU with the Mexican state-owned electricity utility Federal Electricity Commission to develop natural gas and LNG projects, the US energy infrastructure company announced on Monday.

The pair will look at developing the mid-scale Vista Pacifico LNG project at the Topolobampo liquid fuels marine terminal in Sinaloa. Gas would be sourced from Permian Basin assets and finished product would be used for local power generation and export to Asia.

The MoU also proposes an LNG regasification terminal in La Paz, Baja California Sur.

As part of the plan, the two will look at recommissioning the Guaymas-El Oro pipeline through a proposed rerouting based on an understanding between the Yaqui community and the Mexican utility. The pipeline will supply the Pacific coast of Mexico, Baja California Sur and the Vista Pacifico LNG project.

“We remain committed to helping meet Mexico’s growing energy needs as we work to expand our portfolio of renewable energy, energy networks and LNG infrastructure,” said Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure.
