Shell reaches FID on Aphrodite gas project in Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, June 4, 2025 – Shell Trinidad and Tobago Ltd. has reached a positive FID for the Aphrodite offshore gasfield project in Trinidad and Tobago, the company announced on Tuesday.

Located in the East Coast Marine Area (ECMA), the Aphrodite project aims to expand Shell’s gas business in Trinidad and help maximise asset utilisation in the country. The development will leverage existing infrastructure in the ECMA, which already includes the company’s highest-producing gasfields, including Bounty, Dolphin, Endeavour and Starfish.

“This investment is testament to our commitment to help secure the energy future of Trinidad and Tobago on several fronts,” said Shell Trinidad and Tobago senior vice-president and country chair Adam Lowmass. “By increasing the gas supply to Atlantic LNG, the project will not only serve to fortify the domestic gas market, it will also boost the local petrochemical and power generation industries.”

Shell holds a 45% stake in the four-train Atlantic LNG liquefaction facility in Point Fortin, on Trinidad’s southwestern coast. The facility has a total LNG liquefaction capacity of 15 million tonnes per year but has been struggling to operate due to shortfalls in natural gas supply. Shell’s partners in the facility are BP (45%) and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (10%).

Production from Aphrodite is expected to begin in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, and reach a projected peak output of approximately 18,400 boepd.
