Siemens confirms mega Qatar deal

DOHA, May 9, 2017 – On Monday, Siemens confirmed it had been awarded a contract by the state-owned Qatar General Water & Electricity Company for 35 substations.
The deal, at EUR 790 million Siemens’ largest contract ever in the Gulf state, will see the company carry out design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning services. It will also be providing switchgear, transformers and other equipment.
The work will be carried as part of the Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion Project, now in phase 13. The completion of Siemens’ package, which also includes upgrade work on Doha’s so-called super substation, is scheduled for mid-2019.
Since the programme first began in 2005, Siemens has been active in all but the first four phases. To date the company has installed more than 120 substations and some 1,500 kilometres of high-voltage cables.
The award was first announced by Qatar General Water & Electricity Company, better known as Kahramaa, back in April, when it said it had signed agreements with a combined value of USD 2.28 billion.
