Siemens Energy to supply Rolls-Royce with turbines for SMRs
BERLIN, February 28, 2025 – Siemens Energy and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed a partnership agreement for the exclusive supply of conventional technology for small modular reactors (SMRs), Siemens Energy said on Friday.
Under the agreement, Siemens Energy will provide steam turbines, generators and auxiliary systems for Rolls-Royce SMR’s planned Generation 3+ modular nuclear power plants. The final contract is expected by the end of 2025.
SMRs are considered a key technology for nuclear energy and the energy transition, offering a compact, safer and more cost-efficient alternative to traditional nuclear power plants. Rolls-Royce SMR is developing a modular nuclear plant capable of generating up to 470 megawatts, supplying electricity to around 1.1 million households.
Siemens Energy has been a long-term supplier of components for the “power island”, the non-nuclear section of nuclear plants. Its solutions include steam turbines and generators with outputs from 20 megawatts to 1,900 megawatts, as well as operational control technology and control systems.
“We are currently experiencing a global renaissance of nuclear energy. Numerous countries are turning to nuclear technology to produce low-emission electricity, and small modular reactors will play a key role in this,” Siemens Energy executive board member Karim Amin said.
“Siemens Energy brings decades of experience in conventional equipment, while Rolls-Royce has the necessary implementation expertise. This perfect symbiosis enables us to jointly shape the future of energy supply. We are very pleased to be working with Rolls-Royce SMR on this exciting project.”
