SkyPower Global in 1-GW deal with Zambia electric utility

LUSAKA, April 26, 2024 – SkyPower Global has signed a 1-GW power purchase agreement with state-owned Zambia Electricity Supply Corp. (ZESCO), the Canadian solar player said on Friday.

The company will develop the Green Giant Zambia project for the utility, involving the provision of electricity to 4 million homes.

SkyPower Global is billed as the world’s largest developer and owner of utility-scale solar energy projects.

“By leveraging cutting-edge solar technology and our collective expertise, we are set to dramatically transform Zambia’s energy landscape, making it a model for renewable energy development worldwide,” SkyPower Global country manager and special adviser Michael Prest said.

The project will fall under Zambia’s Integrated Renewable Energy Plan, which involves the development of solar, wind and hydropower initiatives.

With an IRENA-estimated installed solar capacity of only 124 MW as of end-2023, Zambia will make a leap forward with the 1-GW addition. A timeline for the project was not provided.

The country’s overall rate of access to electricity stood at 46.7% as of 2021, according to the World Bank.
