Technip Energies signs $10-bln EPC contract in Qatar

QatarEnergy has signed a USD 10-billion EPC contract with Technip Energies and its partner to build two LNG trains at Qatar’s North Field South (NFS) project, the Qatari NOC announced on Tuesday.

The works encompass construction of two 8-million-tonne-per-year LNG trains and associated facilities for gas treatment, NGLs recovery, helium extraction and refining at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Technip Energies will install the assets alongside construction giant Consolidated Contractors Company.

“The NFS project is a unique development that minimises its environmental footprint by design,” said Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy.

“The project includes one of the largest carbon capture and sequestration [CCS] facilities and constitutes an important step towards achieving QatarEnergy’s target of more than 11 million tonnes per year of CCS by 2035.”

In April 2023, QatarEnergy signed a deal with Baker Hughes to supply two main refrigerant compressors for the NFS project.

In October 2022, QatarEnergy announced that ConocoPhillips would join the project with a 6.25% stake, following Shell obtaining a 9.375% stake in the project earlier in October and TotalEnergies taking a similar 9.375% stake in September 2022.

The development is part of the larger North Field expansion project, including North Field South and North Field East.

The entire project aims to produce 48 million tonnes per year of LNG by 2027, pushing Qatar’s overall LNG capacity to around 126 million tonnes per year.
