QatarEnergy chooses Baker Hughes for giant LNG project

DOHA, April 4, 2023 – Baker Hughes has signed a contract with QatarEnergy to supply key components for the North Field South gas project in Qatar, the Texas-based energy technology company confirmed on Monday.

Under the deal signed in Q1 2023, Baker Hughes will supply two main refrigerant compressors, which each consist of three gas turbines and six centrifugal compressors.

Packaging, manufacturing and testing of the components will be done at Baker Hughes’ facilities in Italy, while maintenance and technical assistance will be provided from the company’s service site in Ras Laffan, Qatar.

The units are part of the project’s two LNG trains that will boost the project’s capacity by 16 million tonnes of LNG per year.

In October 2022, QatarEnergy announced that ConocoPhillips would join the project with a 6.25% stake, following Shell obtaining a 9.375% stake in the project earlier in October and TotalEnergies taking a similar 9.375% stake in September 2022.

The development is part of the larger North Field expansion project, including North Field South and North Field East. The entire project aims to produce 48 million tonnes per year of LNG by 2027.
