TotalEnergies, Air Liquide to decarbonise refineries with green hydrogen

MAASVLAKTE, February 18, 2025 – TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have agreed to develop two projects in the Netherlands to supply green hydrogen to refineries in Northern Europe, the companies said on Tuesday.
The hydrogen will be supplied to TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands as part of efforts to decarbonise operations.
The initiative will supply a total of 45,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen produced using renewable power, generated mostly by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, developed by TotalEnergies (50%) and RWE (50%).
A 50-50 joint venture between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide will construct a 250-MW electrolyser near TotalEnergies’ majority-owned Zeeland refinery in the Netherlands, which will produce 30,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen to be delivered to the 148,000-bpd refinery.
Set to be commissioned in 2029, the electrolyser will cut the site’s CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tonnes per year.
Meanwhile, as part of Air Liquide’s 200-MW ELYgator electrolyser project in Maasvlakte, Netherlands, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement for 130 MW to be dedicated to the production of 15,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen for the TotalEnergies platform in Antwerp.
The French energy giant will supply OranjeWind-produced renewable electrons to ELYgator to be transformed into green hydrogen.
The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and will reduce CO2 emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tonnes per year.
“By supplying these two electrolyzers with renewable electricity from our offshore wind project in the Netherlands, TotalEnergies is leveraging its positioning as an integrated electricity company,” TotalEnergies president for refining and chemicals Vincent Stoquart said.
