TotalEnergies, CMA CGM to launch LNG bunkering JV in Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM, July 23, 2025 – TotalEnergies and CMA CGM have agreed to form a 50-50 joint venture to develop and operate LNG bunkering logistics in the port of Rotterdam, the French company said on Wednesday.
The partnership will deploy a 20,000 cubic-metre LNG bunker vessel by 2028 and offer a complete bunkering logistics service in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region. This marks the first time a shipping line and energy provider will jointly operate such infrastructure.
TotalEnergies will supply CMA CGM with up to 360,000 tonnes of LNG per year until 2040 under a long-term agreement to support its growing dual-fuel fleet.
The joint venture builds on several milestones in LNG bunkering between the partners since 2017, including large-scale operations in Rotterdam and Marseille Fos.
CMA CGM has been a pioneer in adopting LNG as a marine fuel and operates one of the largest dual-fuel LNG-powered fleets in the world. The group is investing in alternative fuels and has conducted major LNG bunkering operations across key European ports since 2020.
“The partnership not only strengthens our position as a major player in LNG bunkering but also illustrates the shared commitment of two leading French companies to actively support the energy transition,” TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said.
“For the first time, a shipping company and an energy provider will jointly operate an LNG bunkering vessel… a concrete way to scale up alternative fuels,” CMA CGM chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé said.
The venture is pending regulatory approval.
TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company and the world’s third-largest LNG player, with a portfolio of 40 million tonnes per year in 2024. The company operates across the LNG value chain from production to bunkering, with strategic aims to increase gas sales to 50% of its energy mix by 2030.
