Trinidad’s NGC signs gas supply deal with PCS Nitrogen

PORT OF SPAIN, November 22, 2023 – Trinidad-based ammonia exporter PCS Nitrogen (Nutrien) has reached a deal with the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) for the supply of natural gas, NGC announced on Saturday.

Details on the gas sales contract were not released, but representatives from both companies hailed the deal as significant.

Nutrien, a global producer of potash, nitrogen and phosphate products, operates four ammonia plants in Trinidad and Tobago.

“The importance of this gas sales contract cannot be understated and NGC is committed to doing our part as the aggregator of gas to ensure our downstream sector remains a globally competitive and major contributor to Trinidad and Tobago’s sustained economic development,” NGC president Mark Loquan said.

Trinidad and Tobago’s petrochemicals industry has long been stymied by issues with the natural gas supply.  The government and NGC have taken measures to boost this supply via new exploration and production, as well as an import deal to pipe in gas from Venezuela’s Dragon field.

“We welcome this contract agreement with the National Gas Company and believe it will go some way towards limiting the impact of upstream-related interruptions to gas supplies, further contributing to safety and reliability at our Point Lisas facility,” managing director of Nutrien Trinidad Erik Vettergren said.
