Weatherford chosen for deepwater work in Mexico’s Trion field
HOUSTON, July 29, 2025 – Global energy services company Weatherford has secured a “significant” multi-year contract to deliver managed pressure drilling (MPD) services for Woodside Energy’s Trion deepwater oil development in Mexico, Weatherford announced on Monday.
Under the terms of the contract, Weatherford will provide services for an initial eight wells, with the engagement including a potential extension to 24 wells. The financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
The Trion oilfield is located in the Perdido Ford Belt, approximately 180 kilometres east of Tamaulipas in the Gulf of Mexico, in water depths of around 2,500 metres. Discovered in 2021, it is operated by Woodside Petróleo Operaciones de México with a 60% interest, while PEMEX holds the remaining 40%.
“The Trion development represents a defining moment for Mexico’s energy sector, and Weatherford is honoured to contribute with trusted MPD technologies that improve safety, efficiency, and well delivery. This award further strengthens our position as a trusted partner for complex offshore operations,” said Weatherford president and CEO Girish Saligram.
In March 2025, Woodside contracted with SLB for an 18-well drilling campaign to be carried out at Trion over a period of three years, with drilling operations slated to begin in early 2026.
For production at Trion, Woodside has ordered a semi-submersible FPU from Hyundai Heavy Industries that is currently being built in Ulsan, South Korea. It will be capable of producing up to 100,000 bopd and 4.1 mcm (145 mcf) of natural gas. First production is expected in 2028.
