YPF, GE start up power unit in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, June 7, 2018 – Argentina’s YPF and GE have relaunched an existing power generation company as YPF Luz, international media reported on Thursday.

The new company was established after the partners could not attract a third party to join YPF Energía Electrica, in which GE took a 24.99% stake in February.

YPF Luz already has an installed power generation capacity of 1.8 GW, making it the fifth-largest power producer in Argentina. The company will receive investments worth USD 1 billion through 2020 to double capacity, with the goal of becoming the country’s third-largest electricity generator.

In addition to generating electricity from thermal sources, YPF Luz aims to reach a renewables-based capacity of 800 MW. In line with this goal, the company expects to open the Behr Manantiales wind farm in the coming months.
