Fatality aboard drillship in Gulf of Mexico
HOUSTON, October 21, 2015 – An unidentified worker was fatally injured in an accident on a drillship in the US Gulf of Mexico, Chevron announced Tuesday.
According to the US super-major, the accident did not involve other workers and the environment has not been impacted. Further drilling operations have been put on hold while the US Coast Guard and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement investigate the incident.
The worker had been based on the Pacific Santa Ana drillship located about 322 kilometres offshore Louisiana in the Chevron-operated Keathley Canyon block 96. The ship, supplied by Pacific Drilling, which operates out of Houston, was preparing to drill in the Gibson field after it had completed appraisal work in Chevron’s Anchor field in the Green Canyon block 807.
The worker had been under contract with Pacific Drilling.
The company is “actively addressing the needs of the family and the affected employees,” a Pacific Drilling spokesperson said.
