Oman LNG is an LNG liquefaction complex located in Qalhat, about 175 kilometres east of Muscat on Oman’s northern coast. It is recognised as one of the fastest LNG projects to launch operations, taking just nine years from gas discovery to the export of its first cargo.
Oman LNG is structured as a joint venture between Oman Investment Authority (51%) and Shell (30%), with minority stakes held by TotalEnergies (5.54%), Korea LNG (5%), Mitsubishi Corporation (2.77%), Mitsui (2.77%), PTTEP (2%) and Itochu Corporation (0.92%).
Oman LNG comprises two liquefaction trains, each with a capacity of 3.8 million tpy of LNG. The facility is adjacent to the Qalhat LNG project, which is partially owned by Oman LNG and has one train with a capacity of 3.8 million tpy. The company has plans to construct a fourth liquefaction train on the premises, with startup targeted for 2029.
The facility’s gas is sourced from the Barik, Saih Nihayda and Saih Rawl gasfields and gathered at Saih Rowl, from where it is transported approximately 350 kilometres by pipeline to the liquefaction complex.
Oman LNG supplies markets worldwide and has long-term LNG offtake agreements with numerous international energy companies including:
- Shell, for up to 1.6 million tpy until 2034
- Botaş, for 1 million tpy until 2035
- PTT, for 800,000 tpy until 2035
- TotalEnergies, for 800,000 tpy until 2035
- BP, for up to 1 million tpy until 2036
Shell was the lead technical and commercial adviser on the project and participated in the design and construction of the facility, as well as in the development of the associated gas wells, the gas processing plant and the connecting pipeline.
