35 killed in Nigeria tanker explosion

ABUJA, September 11, 2018 – At least 35 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a gas tanker explosion in the Nigerian state of Nasarawa, local and international media reported Tuesday.

The accident is believed to have happened during gas cylinder refilling, AFP reported. Officials said the gas leak had been reported but they were unable to prevent the fumes from igniting.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has offered his condolences to the government and people of Nasarawa state over the tragic fire incident which started from a petrol station, killing several persons and destroying vehicles and several shops in Lafiya earlier today,” a statement from the Presidency said.

State Emergency Management Agency said the incident was being investigated.
