BP positions Mauritania and Senegal as LNG exporters with first GTA cargo
DAKAR, April 17, 2025 – BP has loaded the first LNG shipment from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project offshore Mauritania and Senegal, positioning the two nations as LNG-exporting countries, the company said on Thursday.
The shipment was transferred from the project’s floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel located 10 kilometres offshore, where the natural gas was cryogenically cooled, liquefied and stored for export. This export marks a major milestone for both Mauritania and Senegal, establishing their positions on the global LNG map.
“This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks a significant new supply for global energy markets,” BP executive vice-president production and operations Gordon Birrell said.
“Starting exports from GTA Phase 1 is an important step for BP and our oil and gas business as we celebrate the creation of a new production hub within our global portfolio.”
GTA Phase 1 is BP’s third major upstream project start-up of 2025, aligning with its strategy to grow its oil and gas portfolio. A total of 10 such projects are expected by the end of 2027.
Located 120 kilometres offshore on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, GTA has been designated “a project of strategic national importance” by both governments. The project taps gas resources in water depths of up to 2,850 metres.
When fully commissioned, GTA Phase 1 is expected to produce around 2.4 million tonnes of LNG annually, with volumes also designated for future domestic supply in both countries.
“This is a very proud day for Mauritania and Senegal. Throughout the development of this project, we have built strong relationships with the project’s host governments, local communities and our partners, and we look forward to strengthening these in years to come as we continue ongoing operations,” BP senior vice-president Mauritania and Senegal Dave Campbell said.
Since entering Mauritania and Senegal in 2017, BP has generated more than 3,000 local jobs through GTA construction and partnered with around 300 local companies. The company is also running a multi-million-dollar social investment programme and an apprentice training scheme to support long-term local development.
