Chiyoda gets nod for FLNG power concept

YOKOHAMA, June 21, 2017 – Chiyoda Corporation has received the American Bureau of Shipping’s approval in principle for its floating LNG power plant, storage and regasification unit design, the Japanese firm said on Wednesday.

Over the past years, Chiyoda has been working on developing a floating LNG power plant concept to tackle “the surplus of LNG carries,” and convert them to power plants with a generation capacity of between 72 MW and 400 MW.

According to the Yokohama-based company, these vessels can be provided “at significantly lower costs and with shorter delivery times.” It added that the concept is suited to providing power in remote locations, as it requires less infrastructure and eliminates the need for LNG receiving facilities.

In a press release, Chiyoda said that the design was approved at the end of May. The sign off by the classification society to the maritime industry means the Chiyoda concept has been deemed to provide the required levels of technical, environmental and safety standards in line with current standards.
