Enel looking to expand in Brazil power sector

SãO PAULO, July 20, 2018 – Italian power company Enel is looking at acquiring three more Brazilian electricity distributors, international media reported Thursday.

Two Eletrobras subsidiaries, expected to go on auction before the end of the year, are being considered, as well as Light, a company controlled by the state government of Minas Gerais.

Enel has recently made major moves in Brazil, beating out Spain’s Iberdrola for a 73.4% stake in São Paulo state distributor Eletropaulo, and this week increasing that stake to 93%. The acquisition made Enel the country’s largest private power company, with a customer base of around 17 million people in four states.
