Eni launches Coral South LNG

MAPUTO, June 2, 2017 – Italy’s Eni on Thursday officially inaugurated the implementation phase of the Coral South FLNG project off Mozambique.

Attended by the country’s president, Filipe Nyusi, the ceremony saw the signing of drilling, construction and installation contracts for works associated with the project. Documents setting out the regulatory framework and financing were also inked. Representatives of Eni’s project partners, CNPC, Galp, Korea Gas Corporation and Mozambique’s ENH, were also in attendance.

The initiation of the implementation phase comes three years after the drilling of last exploration well in the Rovuma basin’s Area 4. The partners will now work to monetise the gas resources via a 3.4-million-tpy FLNG unit.

“As the world transitions to a low-carbon energy mix, Eni believes that the use of gas is critical to achieving a more sustainable future,” Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said in a press release on Thursday.

“The Coral South Project will deliver a reliable source of energy while contributing to Mozambique’s economic development,” he added.
