Mozambique’s MMEC puts resources at centre of growth drive
MAPUTO, May 7, 2026 – Mozambique has opened its flagship mining and energy conference in Maputo with a focus on channelling natural resources to industrialisation, regional integration and sustainable energy growth.
The 12th Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition (MMEC) kicked off on May 6 at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre under the theme “Mozambique: Open for Business – Unlocking Natural Resources for Industrialisation, Diversification and Inclusive Growth.”
President Daniel Chapo said the country wants to move beyond exports by accelerating industrialisation, diversifying the economy and creating long-term value through local content and regional integration. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Estevão Pale described MMEC as a platform for investment promotion and policy dialogue.
The event has brought together ministers and government representatives from Southern Africa as well as executives from ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Eni, Sasol and other international companies.
Mining discussions focused on responsible resource governance, local value addition, industrial competitiveness and resilient regional supply chains, while energy access, electrification and regional energy security were central to discussions on clean energy investment. Financing sessions examined infrastructure finance, legal reforms and investment predictability for mining and energy projects in Mozambique.
