Eni launches Coral North FLNG hull for Mozambique project
GEOJE, January 16, 2026 – Eni has launched the hull of the Coral North FLNG in South Korea for deployment offshore Mozambique, keeping the project on schedule for completion by 2028, the company said on Friday.
The hull was launched during a ceremony at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, attended by Mozambique’s minister of natural resources Estevão Pale. Coral North will be the second floating LNG facility in the Rovuma Basin and will produce gas from the northern section of the Coral gasfield.
The launch marks the moment the vessel’s main structure is floated for the first time, a key milestone before outfitting and integration of processing modules ahead of offshore deployment.
The facility will have a capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per year and double Mozambique’s total LNG output to 7 million tonnes per year, positioning the country as Africa’s third-largest LNG exporter. The project is expected to significantly boost Mozambique’s revenues, job creation and local industry, as well as expand development initiatives.
Eni’s partners in the project include China National Petroleum Corporation, ENH, KOGAS and XRG.
Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006. The company discovered around 2.4 tcm (84.8 tcf) of gas in the Rovuma Basin between 2011 and 2014 and operates Area 4, where Coral North is located. Coral South, its first FLNG project in the area, began production in 2022 and has delivered more than 135 LNG cargoes to date. Eni also supports Mozambique’s social development through education, health and water access programmes.
