Iberdrola takes another step towards 2020 goal

MEXICO CITY, March 23, 2017 – Multinational power generation company Iberdrola announced Thursday that had signed a 25-year contract with Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission to build, own and operate the Topolobampo 3 power plant.

Expected to require an investment of USD 400 million, the combined-cycle plant will have an installed generation capacity of 766 MW, providing electricity for 2.5 million users in the state of Sinaloa. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in January 2020.

GE will provide H01-model gas turbines for Topolobampo 3.

The full extent of this project will require the company to invest in associated infrastructure such as a transformer substation and power lines, facilitating the supply of power from the plant to the national grid.

The award is in line with Iberdrola’s objective of reaching more than 10 GW of installed capacity in Mexico by 2020. The company is currently developing nine other power projects in the country, three of which are combined-cycle plants, two cogeneration plants, two large-scale photovoltaic plants and two wind farms.

The next two Iberdrola projects to come on stream will be the 850-MW Noreste plant in Escobedo, Nuevo León in 2018, and the 887-MW Noroeste plant in Los Mochis, Sinaloa in early 2019.
