Mexico places 16 blocks in Round 3.1

MEXICO CITY, March 27, 2018 – Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Commission kicked off the first phase of the Round 3 E&P bidding process on Tuesday, awarding 16 shallow-water blocks out of the 35 offered.

Pemex was the biggest winner of the auction, taking six blocks in consortium with other companies and one block on its own. The NOC participated in four different winning consortiums: with DEA Deutsche and Compañía Española de Petróleos (CEPSA), another with just CEPSA, one with Total, and one with Shell.

Total, DEA Deutsche, Premier Oil and CEPSA were awarded three blocks, while Repsol and Pan American Energy were granted two. Lukoil, Eni, Sapura, BP, Capricorn Energy, Citla Energy and Shell took one block each.

The winners were granted 30-year licence agreements, which will have no optional extensions included.

The area that received the most interest in Round 3.1 was the Southeastern Basins, where all of the eight blocks offered were adjudicated. The Burgos Basin and Tampico-Misantla-Veracruz area saw the award of four blocks each.

Overall, the 26,265 square kilometres of acreage on auction contained nearly 16.2 billion boe in prospective reserves. The Burgos Basin blocks contained mostly light crude and wet gas, as in the Tampico-Misantla and Veracruz blocks, which also contained dry gas. The primary hydrocarbons types in the Southeastern Basin areas was light crude, gas and heavy oil.
