Nigeria: oil industry reform bill passed

ABUJA, January 26, 2018 – Nigeria’s House of Representatives has passed the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill and it has been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law, local media reported on Thursday.

“After the Clerk of the House, Mr. Abdulkadir Adamu, read the short title of the bill at Thursday’s plenary, the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, ruled that the bill was read and had passed third reading,” Vanguard reported.

The bill, which envisions the breakup of NOC NNPC into several companies and regulatory authorities, is one of four texts into which the original Petroleum Industry Bill, in the works for decades, was split to expedite passage. It passed the Senate in May 2017.

The remaining parts of the original bill are expected to pass by Q2, according to media reports.
