Nigeria’s MRO Energy receives licence to build modular refinery
ABUJA, January 27, 2025 – Nigerian regulator NMDPRA has approved the licensing for a new 10,000-barrel-per-stream-day modular refinery to be built by MRO Energy, the regulator announced on Wednesday.
With the licence, MRO Energy can commence with the refinery’s construction and site development in the Ughelli area of Delta State. The refinery will be designed to produce petrol, diesel, LPG, marine diesel oil and bunker fuel oil. It is further intended to meet Euro 5 standards. The new refinery will bring the total number of refineries in Nigeria to 11, although some of these are currently not operating.
Monday Okoro, managing director of MRO Energy, said, “This approval brings us one step closer to realising our vision of enhancing Nigeria’s refining capacity.”
The new licence comes as Nigeria is transforming its downstream sector with the building of new refineries and the refurbishment of existing ones in an effort to transition from an import-dependent country into a petroleum-product exporter.
