Nord Stream 2 signs Allseas contract

ZUG, April 12, 2017 – Nord Stream 2 said on Wednesday it had started the environmental impact assessment procedure for the Russian sector of the eponymous trans-Baltic gas pipeline, days after it signed a pipelay contract with Allseas Group.

“Based on the comprehensive analysis of the route and landfall options, the Narva Bay route in the Kingisepp District of the Leningrad Region has been defined as the preferred option due to its smaller overall environmental and social impact,” the Zug-based Gazprom subsidiary said in a statement.

“The final decision on the Russian landfall will be made by the Russian environmental authorities.”

In a separate statement on Tuesday, Nord Stream 2 announced the Allseas contract, which it said had been signed last week. It did not specify its value.

The Swiss-based offshore contractor, which laid a section of the first phase of the Nord Stream pipeline and is to participate in the TurkStream project as well, will be one of some 200 companies to work on the 1,200-kilometre twin pipeline that will carry 55 bcm (1.94 tcf) of Russian gas to the EU per year.

Allstream will take part in the project, expected to be completed by the end of 2019, with three of its ships — the giant Pioneering Spirit supported by Audacia and Solitaire.

“The utilisation of the dynamically-positioned pipelay vessels, which are able to carry out precise maneuvering without anchors, should ensure additional environmental protection and safety in the congested Baltic Sea,” Nord Stream 2 said.
