Pemex awards refinery upgrade contract

MEXICO CITY, October 22, 2014 – Pemex last week awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract to a subsidiary of Foster Wheeler’s Global Engineering and Construction for the development of an ultra-low sulphur diesel project at the Salina Cruz refinery in Oaxaca, Mexico.

While the contract’s value remains undisclosed, Mexico’s national oil company Pemex plans to invest more than $500 million in upgrades to the aging refinery. Construction for the project is scheduled for completion in 2018, whereby the new facilities will reduce the sulphur content in refined diesel fuel from 500 to 15 parts per million.

The project will include the refurbishment of four diesel hydrodesulphurisation units as well as the installation of new sulphur recovery and sour water stripping equipment and new units for hydrogen production.
