Shell acquires Europe’s largest biomethane entity

LONDON, February 24, 2023 – Shell has completed the acquisition of Europe’s largest producer of renewable natural gas, the UK energy giant announced on Monday.

The agreement to acquire 100% shares in Nature Energy Biogas was signed in November 2022.

The bought entity has 14 operating biomethane plants with associated structures and feedstock deals.

Additionally, the company has 30 new projects planned in Europe and North America, with more than one third of them located in Denmark, the Netherlands and France in late stages of development.

Under the deal, Nature Energy Biogas will operate as a subsidiary of Shell.

While the exact cost of the deal was not disclosed, it is expected to be around USD 2 billion.

Shell has set a target to have net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 from its energy business.
