TotalEnergies, Eni secure deal to export Cyprus gas via Egypt
CAIRO, February 17, 2025 – TotalEnergies and Eni have signed an agreement with the governments of Cyprus and Egypt for the export of Cyprus Block 6 gas through Egypt, the companies announced on Monday.
The gas will be transported through existing infrastructure in Egypt.
The agreement is a major step forward for the development of Block 6’s Cronos gasfield. The field was discovered in 2022 and successfully appraised in February 2024.
Cronos gas will be processed in the existing facilities for Egypt’s star offshore asset, the Zohr gasfield, and then liquefied in the country’s Damietta LNG plant.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides presided over the signing of the Host Government Agreement, which took place at the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES).
Also present were Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus George Papanastasiou.
“This agreement paves the way to bring Cyprus’s gas to the market in a timely fashion, contributing to energy security and competitiveness of energy supply,” Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said.
Meanwhile, Julien Pouget, senior vice-president for Middle East and North Africa exploration and production at TotalEnergies, highlighted the project’s contribution to European energy security by delivering additional LNG volumes.
