TotalEnergies expands LNG bunkering with new vessel
PARIS, October 10, 2024 – TotalEnergies is expanding its global LNG bunkering footprint with a new vessel that may be deployed to Oman, the company said on Thursday.
The French energy giant signed a charter contract with Spanish shipowner Ibaizabal for the new 18,600-cubic-metre-capacity vessel.
The deal is aimed at growing the French company’s global presence in bunkering hubs, with an eye on Oman, where the company is developing the Marsa LNG project to provide LNG to the shipping sector in the Gulf.
The vessel, under construction by China’s Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding, will be delivered by end-2026. It has the capability to supply LNG to a wide range of vessels, including container ships, tankers, large cruise ships and ferries.
LNG’s use as a marine fuel provides a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over traditional fuels, while also reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by up to 85% and almost completely eliminating (by 99%) sulfur oxides (SOx) and fine particulate matter, TotalEnergies noted.
“With new LNG-fuelled vessels coming on stream at a rapid pace, we are committed to playing our part in responding to the sector’s increasing demand for this fuel which can help global shipping meet its decarbonization ambitions,” TotalEnergies senior vice-president for aviation and marine fuels Louise Tricoire said.
