US to offer offshore acreages for exploration

NEW ORLEANS, September 15, 2016 – The US’ Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will offer about 47 million acres for oil and gas exploration and development offshore Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in a March 2017 lease sale, the organisation announced yesterday.

All available unleased areas in the Central Planning Area will be included in the sale, dubbed Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 247. That includes 8,878 blocks, located between 5 km and 370 km from the shore, in water depths ranging between 3 m and 3,400 m.

Sale 247, which will take place in New Orleans, will be the twelfth offshore sale under the Obama administration’s Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program for 2012-2017. Previous sales in this five-year programme have already generated more than USD 3 billion. The finale notice of sale will be published at least 30 days before the sale will take place.
