Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI), also known by its trademark Q8, refines and markets fuel, lubricants and other petroleum products worldwide. Established in 1983, it is a 100% subsidiary and the downstream international arm of KPC. In 2023 the company had more than 1,800 employees in more than 35 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and total revenues of about USD 25 billion.

The company divides its activities into three main segments: refining operations, direct fuel services and retail fuel sales.

KPI’s refining operations are carried out under joint venture agreements at three separate facilities.

  • The Milazzo refinery in Italy, in partnership with AGIP (now Eni) since 1996, which can process around 230,000 bopd
  • The Nghi Son refinery in Vietnam, in partnership with Petrovietnam, Idemitsu and Mitsui Chemical since 2008 (200,000 bopd)
  • The Duqm (OQ8) Refinery in Oman, in partnership with OQ since 2018 (230,000 bopd)

The direct services division serves engine fuel, heating oil and lubricants to large customers such as public utilities, local authorities, transport and aviation companies, agricultural and industrial companies, and residential buildings. Delivery to each of these customer segments is carried out through dedicated logistical networks and distribution infrastructure.

Retail fuel sales are carried out through a network of more than 3,500 branded service stations throughout Europe and Vietnam. At these locations, KPI also offers motorists ancillary products and services delivered through partnerships with, for example, local restaurant and supermarket chains. The company is in the process of rolling out electric charging stations, which are already available at its locations in Benelux, Italy and Spain.

KPI also has a research division, Q8 Research, which engages in product development and adjusts the specifications of different materials and products. The division is also responsible for quality control and ensuring that Q8 products are compliant with applicable safety, health and environmental regulations.
