Egypt’s EGAS has awarded four exploratory oil and gas licences for blocks located off its Mediterranean coast, the state-owned gas company said in a statement Tuesday.

East Mediterranean Gas Forum launched

CAIRO, September 22, 2020 – The long-planned East Mediterranean Gas Forum was formally established on Tuesday via a virtual ceremony.

The group comprises Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority and will be based in Cairo. France has also applied to join.

The forum is a key part of Egypt’s strategy to become the East Mediterranean energy hub, taking advantage of the availability of gas, its existing infrastructure and its strategic position.

“Egypt is setting the goals of the East Mediterranean countries that need to monetise their natural gas resources now and in the future,” Tarek El Molla, Egypt’s minister of petroleum and mineral resources, told The Energy Year last year.
