Mozambique becomes LNG producer with Eni’s Coral South launch

MAPUTO, November 1, 2022 – Eni has launched production from its Mozambique LNG project, bringing the East African country into the league of global LNG producers.

The initial shipment of liquefied gas from the Coral South FLNG vessel is to be made soon, with cargoes sold to BP under a 20-year deal.

The project is expected to liquefy 3.4 million tonnes per year.

The Italian energy giant unveiled the start-up news in its Q3 results. The company operates the project, which liquefies gas from the offshore Area 4 concession, held by Eni along with partners ExxonMobil, CNPC, Galp, Kogas and Mozambique’s state-owned ENH.

The Coral South arrived at its operating site in January, and gas was introduced to the FLNG vessel in June.
