Nigeria’s Sahara Group signs 20-year deal with Mexico’s Amigo LNG
LAGOS, April 25, 2025 – Nigeria’s Sahara Group has signed a 20-year deal with Mexico’s Amigo LNG to supply LNG to Latin American markets, Reuters reported on Friday.
The agreement will involve Sahara Group supplying 500,000-800,000 tonnes of LNG annually to Amigo LNG, with deliveries beginning in 2026 from the group’s new floating LNG facility offshore Nigeria.
“This deal marks a significant milestone in Sahara Group’s plan to enhance energy access and promote clean fuels across emerging markets,” executive director Temitope Shonubi said. The LNG will be sourced from the group’s newly developed floating LNG terminal in the Niger Delta region, which is designed to produce 2.4 million tonnes of LNG per year.
“Our new FLNG facility underlines our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions to customers globally,” Shonubi said.
Amigo LNG is a new export terminal under development in Altamira, Tamaulipas state, Mexico. The terminal, which will have an initial production capacity of 3.9 million tonnes of LNG per year, is being developed by a partnership between Mexico’s Compañía Mexicana de Gas and Texas-based Edge LNG, targeting the growing demand for LNG exports across the Americas.
Sahara Group said the partnership with Amigo LNG aims to enhance energy security, reduce energy poverty and accelerate the transition to cleaner fuels. “The collaboration between Sahara Group and Amigo LNG is a strategic move to deepen our shared vision of facilitating access to energy, promoting cleaner fuels and bridging energy gaps across emerging economies,” head of Sahara Group’s upstream division Moroti Adedoyin-Adeyinka said.
The companies intend to explore further opportunities including joint infrastructure development, LNG bunkering and distribution across key markets in the Americas.
The deal is part of Sahara Group’s wider plan to expand LNG exports to regions including Central America, the Caribbean and South America. The company is currently investing in infrastructure to support the transportation and storage of LNG to customer facilities.
