PDO hits drilling milestone at Nimr cluster in Oman

MUSCAT, August 3, 2023 – Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has drilled 1,500 wells on the Nimr cluster in Oman, the Omani E&P player announced on Wednesday.

The NM-1500 well is located in the southern area of the Nimr concession and began production 15 hours after the rig was moved.

The 1,880-square-kilometre Nimr block is PDO’s largest cluster and consists of 23 fields. It contributes more than 12% of the company’s overall production.

The first discovery well, NM-1, was drilled in 1980 in the Nimr-C area, with production beginning a few years later following commissioning of production facilities.

In 2013, NM-1000 was drilled over a 23-day period and is now in production.

The Nimr block now delivers more than 130 new wells per year for the company.

“This historic accomplishment of drilling the 1,500th well in the Nimr cluster underpins our long-term commitment to sustainable growth and maximising value to Oman’s economy,” said Steve Phimister, managing director of PDO.

“We are setting new benchmarks in the energy sector, safely and competitively growing our core business, in terms of both cost and carbon performance.”
