Steve Newman named new director at Bumi Armada

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8, 2015 – Steve Newman, the former CEO of Swiss offshore drilling contractor Transocean, will be the new independent director for Malaysian offshore oilfield services provider Bumi Armada. He will take over the new role from 1 July.

“Members of the board will value [Newman’s] executive experience having been a chief executive of a large global organisation, as well as his expertise and insight in the offshore oil and gas industry and strategy development, which will add further strength to the board,” said Bumi Armada chairman Tunku Ali Redhauddin in a company statement.

Newman stepped down from his role at Transocean earlier this year, having worked for the company since 1999. According to Reuters, leadership of the company felt he was too conservative in response to industry changes in the last five years. He guided the company through its most difficult period, which saw it pay a fine of $1 billion to the US government after it was found negligent in its operation of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
