Algeria announces winners of solar auctions totalling 3 GW

ALGIERS, March 25, 2024 – The government of Algeria has unveiled the winners of two solar PV tenders, the first launched in 2021 and the second held last year, totalling 3 GW, PV Magazine reported on Monday.

Contracts were awarded by Algerian gas and electricity utility Sonelgaz.

The 2021 tender, for 1 GW, resulted in awards to China State Construction Engineering Corp. (300 MW) , Turkish contractor Ozgun (300 MW), Animer Energy (150 MW) and a consortium of Algerian engineering group Cosider and Italian inverter manufacturer Fimer (250 MW).

Meanwhile, the second tender, launched in February 2023 for a total of 2 GW, resulted in awards to a consortium of China International Water and Electric Corporation, China Nuclear Industry Huaxing Construction Company and YREC for five projects (780 MW); the Cosider-Fimer consortium (280 MW); local player Eurl Hamdi (160 MW); Shanxi Installation Group Company (80 MW); and Ozgun (80 MW).

Sonelgaz announced the 19 awards in mid-March but did not disclose specific winners.

Algeria targets the installation of 22 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, constituted mainly by solar PV (62%) and wind (23%).

Despite being home to solar irradiation levels that are among the world’s highest, Algeria’s solar PV capacity stood at only around 450 MW as of end-2022.
